It is produced by the anthraquinone process by the oxidation of hydrogen with atmospheric oxygen catalyzed by anthraquinone alkyl derivatives.

It is used for bleaching paper and wood pulp, cotton, fabrics, knitwear, soaps, for the production of bleaching and disinfecting agents, as well as an oxidizing agent, catalyst, hydrogenating and epoxidizing agent used in various industries.
